A chemical peel is a transformative skin treatment that exfoliates the top layer of your skin and helps to purge blemishes from your pores. They come in different strengths and target different skin conditions, but how do chemical peels in general work and what do they do for your skin?

How does a chemical peel work?

A chemical peel is a solution that is lightly applied to your skin in one, two, or three layers. Each chemical peel combines different measures and strengths of acids, chemicals, and active ingredients. The chemicals damage the top layer of your skin that is compromised or already damaged, i.e. it is acne-prone or hyperpigmented. These damages the top layer of skin and the top layer of skin cells eventually shed as dry skin, revealing a fresher and healthier layer beneath them. It also helps to draw out blemishes such as spots and blackheads, because it removes the skin cells atop them that are stopping the spots from coming to the surface.

Chemical peels for…

  • Normal skin – If you have fairly normal, unproblematic skin but are noticing it is a bit dull or needs an extra boost, then you might benefit from a Mandelic Acid Peel. This peel is very light with minimal downtime but is great for improving skin tone and brightening the skin.
  • Ageing skin – The signs of ageing can be combatted by either the Retinol Peel or the TCA 25% Peel. The Retinol Peel exfoliates and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while also correcting congested skin and acne. The TCA 25% Peel is a more intensive peel for ageing skin as it encourages deeper remodelling. It improves fine lines, wrinkles, scars, pigmentation, and even stretch marks.
  • Acne-prone skinThe Salicylic Acid Peel is specifically formulated to treat acne-prone and congested skin. It breaks down oil and rebalances its production, controls inflammation, kills bacteria that may inflame the blemishes, and stimulates a controlled and positive skin cell turnover.
  • The eyes and lips – One specifically formulated chemical peel we’re proud to offer is the Eyes and Lips Peel, which has been specially designed to treat the skin around the eyes and lips for signs of ageing, including volume loss and fine lines around the area.

Chemical peels and collagen production

Something that nearly all chemical peels do is stimulates the production of collagen in the skin. Because the surface layer of the skin has been lightly wounded, the body’s renewal and healing powers kick in. Fresh collagen, which we lose from our natural stores from 30 years of age onwards, is produced in the skin to heal any damage and replace old skin cells. This leads to bouncier, younger-looking, and more vibrant skin because this vital skin compound has been produced. Throughout chemical peels, you could notice a big change in the bounce, laxity, and firmness of your skin because of this positive collagen production.
