It’s one of the common questions we’re asked here at our Suffolk skin clinic – and with botox injections still being one of the most popular aesthetic treatments, it’s easy to see why.

In this post, we talk through the treatment and build a picture about what’s involved, including aftercare, to help determine if it’s right for you. Of course, a consultation here at our Suffolk skin clinic should always be your first step – but we love to share our advice and our expertise on our blog, too.

What exactly is Botox?

Botox injections are an industry name for a type of cosmetic procedure, which ‘relaxes’ your muscles. This effectively smoothes out wrinkles and lines and refines the appearance of your complexion. It’s usually used on the forehead and around the eyes, but can also treat gummy smiles and create a slimming effect in the neck area.

Is Botox harmful?

No, it’s safe to use for medical and cosmetic purposes. Only qualified medical professionals such as Rebecca Taylor, our Independent Nurse Prescriber, can carry out the treatment and it must be prescribed to you first.

How long do its effects last?

Usually, Botox injections last between 3-4 months before being safely passed out of the body. You’ll notice movement returning in the injected areas when this happens. With regular Botox injections, your wrinkles may be less noticeable – and as your muscles will be ‘used less’, you may be able to go longer between treatments. You should see results in a matter of days, but they can take a couple of weeks.

Do I have other options?

Of course. If wrinkles and lines are your main concern, then most facial aesthetics treatments can have a positive impact, including chemical peels and dermal fillers. It all depends on where they are, what’s caused them, and how deep they are. Part of the reason we offer a consultation to our clients is to ensure it’s the right decision for you – so if something would give better results, we’ll be upfront about it.

What happens during my appointment?

If Botox is right for you and you decide to have the treatment, you can expect it to take only 20 minutes, with side effects passing quickly and results lasting several months. An initial consultation is always required.

Is Botox preventative or corrective?

It’s a delicate balance of both things. It can be used preventatively by targeting very faint lines, which are yet to develop into full wrinkles, and it can be used to correct those that are already noticeable. Preventative Botox is a fairly new approach and should be started early, but it can help save money on expensive creams or surgical treatments in the long run.
