Jaw slimming treatment in Suffolk

The masseter is the strong muscle at the angle of your jaw that does the work of chewing. In some people it becomes overactive or enlarged, whether through years of clenching and grinding or simply through a naturally strong muscle. That can show up two ways: a wider, more square-set lower face, and the tension, wear and discomfort that come with a jaw that never fully switches off.

Relaxing the muscle addresses both at once. It gradually softens the jawline for a slimmer, more balanced lower face, while easing the clenching that damages teeth and triggers tension. Because it is non-surgical, there is no general anaesthetic and no real recovery time. As a Registered Nurse and Independent Nurse Prescriber, RGN INP MSc, Rebecca assesses your muscle strength and bite before treating, so the dose suits your anatomy rather than a fixed formula.

The treatment itself takes around 20 to 30 minutes at our Suffolk clinic, following your consultation. A small number of injections are placed into the masseter on each side, using very fine needles. You will have discussed exactly what is involved beforehand, so nothing on the day comes as a surprise.

There is very little downtime. Most people return to normal activities the same day. The area can feel slightly tender when chewing for a day or two, and occasionally there is minor redness or bruising at an injection site, but nothing that usually stops you getting on with your day.

Relief from clenching and jaw tension often comes first, within one to two weeks. The slimming effect develops more gradually as the muscle reduces in size, usually over four to six weeks. Results typically last several months. With repeated treatment the muscle tends to soften further, so many people find they need their appointments less often over time.

Rebecca will ask you to clench your jaw so she can feel the muscle and judge its size and symmetry, then treat the target points on each side. The needles are fine and most people find the treatment very manageable. The whole appointment is calm and unhurried, with time to ask questions before anything is done.

Common effects are mild and short-lived: tenderness, a little swelling or bruising, and occasionally a feeling of heaviness when chewing while the muscle adjusts. More significant effects, such as a temporary change to your smile or bite, are uncommon and are closely tied to accurate placement. This is exactly why the treatment should be carried out by an experienced medical prescriber who knows the anatomy of the jaw.

For the first 24 hours, avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and excess heat such as saunas, and try not to rub or massage the treated area. Stay upright for the first few hours. Rebecca will talk you through your full aftercare before you leave, and arrange a review if one is needed.

treatment areas

Jawline & lower face

Softening a strong masseter gradually slims and refines the lower face, giving a smoother jawline and a more balanced profile without surgery.

Teeth grinding (bruxism)

Relaxing the muscle reduces night-time grinding and clenching, helping protect your teeth from wear and easing pressure on the jaw.

Jaw clenching & tension

For a jaw that aches or feels tight, calming the muscle can ease day-to-day tension and the headaches that often go with it.

TMJ discomfort

Where clenching contributes to jaw-joint discomfort, reducing the pull of the masseter can bring welcome relief alongside your dentist’s care.

TMJ discomfort

Where clenching contributes to jaw-joint discomfort, reducing the pull of the masseter can bring welcome relief alongside your dentist’s care.

If you are also concerned about volume or definition in the lower face, treatments such as dermal fillers or Profhilo may be recommended alongside your jaw treatment.

FAQs about jaw slimming & teeth grinding

  • No. This is a non-surgical treatment with no general anaesthetic, no cutting and no real recovery time. It works by relaxing the jaw muscle rather than altering bone, so the change is gradual and can be maintained or allowed to wear off. It suits people who want a softer jawline or relief from grinding without an operation.

  • Yes. By easing the activity of the masseter, the treatment reduces the force of grinding and clenching, which are often worst during sleep. Many people notice less jaw tension and fewer tension headaches, and it can help protect teeth from ongoing wear. Rebecca will assess whether it is the right option for you during your consultation.

  • Relief from clenching and tension often comes within one to two weeks. The slimming effect on the jawline is slower to appear, developing over roughly four to six weeks as the muscle gradually reduces in size.

  • Results typically last several months, and jaw treatment often lasts longer than treatment to the upper face because of how the muscle responds. With repeated treatment the muscle tends to reduce further, so appointments are often needed less frequently over time.

  • For most people, no. You keep normal chewing and full expression. Occasionally the jaw can feel a little heavy when chewing while the muscle adjusts, which settles as you get used to it. Precise placement by an experienced prescriber is what keeps your bite and smile working normally, which is why who treats you matters.

  • The needles are very fine and most people find it very manageable. Downtime is minimal: you can usually carry on with your day straight away, with perhaps some mild tenderness when chewing for a day or two.

  • It is often a good option for people with a strong or square jawline, or those who grind, clench or wake with jaw tension. Suitability is always confirmed at a face-to-face consultation, where Rebecca reviews your jaw, your bite and your medical history before recommending anything. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

  • All new anti-wrinkle injection patients are required to have a consultation, which is £50. The cost of treatment depends on your individual needs and the amount of treatment required, and will be confirmed during your consultation. Treatment starts from £300.

  • Yes. Jaw treatment is often planned alongside other work to balance the face as a whole. Rebecca will only ever recommend what genuinely suits your goals, and will talk you through any combination at your consultation rather than treating each area in isolation.

  • Your treatment is carried out by Rebecca Taylor, a Registered Nurse and Independent Nurse Prescriber RGN INP MSc, with advanced training in facial aesthetics. Because the jaw is a functional area, careful assessment of the muscle and bite matters, and every plan is tailored to your individual anatomy.
